Big-Time Gurus Called To The Mat

Being in the States leaves us little vantage point to surmise just exactly how people feel about big-time gurus in India. Sure, there are hundreds of fawning propaganda pieces seeded by the likes of Sri Sri Ravi Shankar and his ilk, but do these really reflect the attitudes of India's clear-minded folk? We certainly would like to think not.
So we were very pleased to encounter this article in India's Organizer this morning, plopped right down in an issue full of the same effusive nonsense that every big-time guru's PR department churns out with a horrifying, mind-clouding regularity in Bharat:
In an age with a plethora of god-men, gurus, preachers, some so popular as to have ashrams in many states and even in many countries, it is an astonishing truth that society is rudderless, adrift on an ocean of hedonism, without spiritual and moral guidance.Looks like we just discovered another true hero in India. The turban is on the floor for author Sandhya Jain, who now bears a much closer observation here at Guruphiliac HQ.
The fault lies with Star Gurus who seek self-aggrandisement by building huge cult followings and five-star ashrams where rich Indian and foreign devotees can practice yoga and meditation in comfort, in salubrious, resort-like environs. Justifying the Marxist slander of religion as the opium of the people, they peddle lullabies to frustrated millions seeking release from life’s myriad problems. Such vicarious redemption is totally un-Hindu, and extremely harmful, as it turns a blind eye to festering evils and allows them to multiply under cover of a guru’s benign gaze.

It was precisely the same Sandhya Jain who was plucky enough to reveal the following fact in one of her columns much earlier.
That this ssrs with his assiduously manufactured halo around him , exhorted a lot of his " hindu devotees(idiots)" to sign a petition against antonio maino alias sonia gandhi ( the truth about sonia is replete with murkier treacheries and treason but this is not the forum for it). When the nodders , after dutifully etching their signatures , asked the sohamsoham ssrs , to crown it with his signature, he REFUSED !
When one of his ardent idiots was asked if this was not pusillanimity on the ' mighty sohamsohamguru's part, the idiot shot back:
" So what? Our "jaigurudevji" would make his point at the ballot box" .
Lol...
It is precisely because of such incorrigibly idiotised devotees that such charlatans expand their empires.
If I remember right this Organizer is RSS's. When I presented the facts collated from your blog plus other reports from some people in the know to one of the members of RSS , he replied:
" But such people serve the needs of the time...they come and they go....dharma is in peril..." yadayada clinching his reply with some " quotations ".
A picture of Sun howsoever big and lifelike it may be , can NEVER help plants in photosynthesis or sustain humans.
Lest any hindutvahindu kneejerkily brand me a " converted Christian" , let me reiterate , I am very much a Yajurveda Brahmin.
I always wholeheartedly say " God Bless America " in my mind , because only your blog ( and other such blogs that don't belong to Indians) and your country that do not muzzle Truth.
Whatever comments I write about ssrs in indian newspapers including rediff.com , promptly get deleted.
And India shamelessly preens ,calling itself a democracy.
Demonacracy would be more appropriate.
Unfortunately, there actually is a good deal of truth muzzling going on in the USA -- it's just that "big-time gurus" as such are not as entangled with the social, economic, and political life of the country as they are in India. Here, it's nominally Christian clergy -- especially those involved in the very lucrative "televangelism" and "megachurch" phenomena -- who try (often successfully) to muzzle criticism in the major media.
Perhaps some blogger in India could perform a service like Jodyji's targeting this American breed of phony holy men, many of whom have gotten fabulously wealthy by finagling elderly people with hopes of "heaven" out of what little money they have!

As I believed , America which literally was rocked by Swami Vivekananda and welcomed with "... HE, a heathen??? No way, we Americans need more people like Him here..." by a WHITE American, stands for Truth.

I am an ordinary human being and I find it really nice to hear that SSRS and other people you write about here are ordinary too. And this is precisely why I admire these very people.They are more close to the reality than a photo of Vivekananda, Ramakrishna Paramhansa, Raman Maharishi etc about whom people can say as many good things as they like without any proof. I would rather learn about and from the SSRS, Ramdev & Ammas of the world rather than auspiciously garlanded photographs of Raman Maharishi. These guys are so real. You live with your photo framed historic ideals and your loner Swamis, while I choose these worldly wise teachers from whom I can learn a lot about how to improve my life materially and spiritually by just observing their actions.
